Rural Health Systems - Rural Hospitals

OBJECTIVES

  1. Understand the current issues, strategies, team dynamics and the physicians role in rural hospitals.
  2. Understand that issues will change over time and be able to access information as the rural hospital system evolves.

TEACHING STRATEGIES

Required reading should be "A 10-Point Strategic Checklist for Rural Health Care Systems". When on a rural hospital rotation have discussions with the: administration - financial status; current coping strategies

pharmacy - understand how physician prescribing habits impact the hospital

QUINCY FAMILY PRACTICE CENTER PERSPECTIVES:

Five years ago, the essential access hospital program would have been studied as a model. Now there is a discussion of limited access hospitals. What impact will managed care have on hospitals in rual areas? It is a dynamic, evolving changing system. Our residents will learn about the current issues of local and regional hospitals. Residents will learn where to look for current evolving issues and resources to understand and deal with future challenges of the health care systems.
