Palps--movable appendages anterior and lateral to basis capituli and overlying hypostome and chelicerae dorsolaterally
they swing open laterally upon insertion of hypostome for feedings
Festoons--grooved rectangular structures at posterior margin of idiosoma present in all common genera except Ixodes
Anal Groove--curvilinear indentation of caudal ventral surface, nearly circumscribing anus; located posterior to anus in all genera but Ixodes
